What Is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy may also be known as counseling, psychological therapy, mental health counseling, clinical social work, or just therapy. Psychotherapy or counseling assists people who are experiencing difficulties with ways they think (such as self-criticism or other destructive thought patterns) or feel (moods, overwhelming emotions) or act (behaviors that are destructive or problematic in some way), or who are seeking personal growth or enhancement of some aspect of life such as a relationship or career direction. Psychotherapy involves the development of a therapeutic relationship and the use of dialogue and therapeutic techniques that help guide the client. Through this process, clients may experience relief from their symptoms or problems by gaining a clearer understanding or insight into their situation, by resolving conflicts or improving communication in a relationship, by learning to feel better about themselves, or by making changes in behavior or thinking patterns.

Mind-Body Therapy Limitations

As we learn more about mind-body-spirit connections, we know that there are many overlapping areas between psychological (mind) and physical (body) concerns. For example, chronic stress or anxiety can lead to a host of physical problems, and poor nutrition or lack of exercise can contribute to cognitive and emotional symptoms. That overlap is part of the holistic psychotherapy framework.

Mind-body therapy recognizes the connection between thoughts, feelings, and bodily function and is designed to promote overall health and relaxation. Although this work may lead to improvements in physical problems, we do not offer treatment of explicitly bodily/physiological symptoms, and we do not prescribe medications or other medical interventions.
